FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about practicing and taking mock tests for IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training).

The total time for the IELTS Writing section is 60 minutes for both Task 1 and Task 2. It’s recommended to spend around 20 minutes on Task 1, as it’s worth one-third of your Writing score and is generally easier than Task 2.

There are 9 common types of letters that frequently appear in the test:

  • Request

  • Complaint

  • Apology

  • Thank-you

  • Invitation

  • Advice

  • Explanation

  • Condolence

  • Recommendation

You must write at least 150 words. Writing fewer than 150 words can lower your score.

In General Training, you’ll write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a real-life situation. In Academic, you’ll describe or analyze a graph, chart, process, or map. The tone and writing style are more casual in General, while Academic requires a more formal and analytical approach.

There’s no strict upper limit, but writing 150 to 200 words is ideal. Writing too much won’t improve your score and could waste time better spent on Task 2.
