How much time should I spend on IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training)?
The total time for the IELTS Writing section is 60 minutes for both Task 1 and Task 2. It’s recommended to spend around 20 minutes on Task 1, as it’s worth one-third of your Writing score and is generally easier than Task 2.

What’s the minimum word count for Task 1?
You must write at least 150 words. Writing fewer than 150 words can lower your score.
How is Task 1 different in General Training vs. Academic?
In General Training, you’ll write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a real-life situation. In Academic, you’ll describe or analyze a graph, chart, process, or map. The tone and writing style are more casual in General, while Academic requires a more formal and analytical approach.
Is there a word limit for IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training)?
There’s no strict upper limit, but writing 150 to 200 words is ideal. Writing too much won’t improve your score and could waste time better spent on Task 2.
