Q: Why is Writing Task 2 more important than Task 1?

Task 2 counts for two-thirds of the Writing score because it is more demanding than Task 1. Task 1 is usually a short description of around 150 words, while Task 2 asks you to explain ideas, support your opinion, and stay well organized in a longer essay. IELTS gives Task 2 more weight for that reason, so it is usually the best place to focus your study time.

Q: Is IELTS Speaking scored by each part?

No. Examiners score the full speaking test using four criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. There is no separate score for Part 1, Part 2, or Part 3.

Q: How does IELTS rounding work?

If the decimal part is from .25 to .74, round up to .5. If it is .75 or higher, round up to the next whole band. For example, 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.75 becomes 7.0. Whole numbers and .5 scores stay the same.

Q: Are the Academic and General Training Reading conversion tables different?

Yes. The two tables are different. General Training usually needs more correct answers for the same band because the texts are simpler, so you should use the right table for your test type.

Q: What band score do 30 correct Listening answers give?

30–31 correct answers equal Band 7.0 in IELTS Listening. You can use the calculator at the top of the page to check any score level quickly.

Q: How long is an IELTS score valid?

IELTS results are valid for 2 years from the test date. After that, most universities and organizations will not accept the score, and you will need to take the test again.

Q: What are the 4 IELTS Writing scoring criteria?

The four criteria are Task Achievement/Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Each one counts for 25% of the score and uses the 0–9 band scale.

Q: What official source does this calculator use?

The Listening and Reading tables are based on ielts.idp.com. The Writing and Speaking formulas follow official IELTS guidance from British Council and IDP. Scores below Band 4 are for reference only, because official conversion tables are not published for that range.

Q: Do I need to round each skill before calculating the Overall score?

No. Keep each skill score as it is, then average the four skills to get the Overall score. The tool applies the rounding rule only at the end.

How IELTS Writing is scored

Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1. Each task is scored on four criteria, then the two task scores are combined into the final Writing band.
