FAQs – Common Questions
Got questions while practicing IELTS Writing? Here are the answers.
How long is the IELTS Writing test?
The Writing section takes 60 minutes. It’s recommended to spend 20 minutes on Task 1 (worth one-third of the total score) and 40 minutes on Task 2, which requires deeper reasoning and stronger arguments.
What’s the minimum word count for each task?
Task 1: at least 150 words
Task 2: at least 250 words
Writing fewer words may lower your score, so try to meet or exceed the word limit.
What’s the difference between Academic and General Training Writing?
Task 1:
Academic: write a report based on a chart, map, or diagram
General Training: write a letter about a real-life situation
Task 2:
Both versions follow the same structure, but Academic usually requires more formal and complex language.
How is the IELTS Writing score calculated?
Each task is scored based on four criteria:
Task Achievement/Response
Coherence & Cohesion
Lexical Resource
Grammatical Range & Accuracy
The final Writing score = (Task 1 score + 2 × Task 2 score) ÷ 3, then rounded to the nearest 0.5 band.
Can I get my IELTS Writing checked for free?
